Massachusetts' Senators Say 'No' to Rolling Back Legal Weed

Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey say they'll vote against Question 8, the November ballot measure that would end adult-use cannabis sales in Massachusetts. Recent polls show most likely voters agree with them.

State moves

Massachusetts voters legalized adult-use cannabis in 2016. On Nov. 3, they'll decide whether to take most of it back, and the state's two U.S. senators have picked a side.

In interviews with Marijuana Moment, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey both said they'll vote no on Question 8. Warren put it simply: "There are improvements we could make, but repeal is not one of them." They join Gov. Maura Healey and Rep. Ayanna Pressley on the "no" side.

What Question 8 would do: end licensed adult-use sales and home growing. Medical cannabis would stay, and adults 21+ could still possess up to one ounce.

Where the polls stand: a MassINC survey for CommonWealth Beacon found 61% of likely voters opposed and 27% in favor. A University of New Hampshire poll had opposition at 71%.

If it passes, it would be the first time any state has repealed a voter-approved adult-use law.

What it means for travelers: nothing changes for now. Adult-use stores stay open for shoppers 21+ with valid ID, and even if Question 8 passed, the changes wouldn't take effect until 2028. We'll keep an eye on Election Night.
